Southern Exposure Takes 3 Straight in 3-1 Win Over Matadors
After dropping a close first set, Southern Exposure regrouped to take the next three in a 3-1 upending of the Matadors.
Set one saw Southern Exposure struggling to finish a single rally, allowing the Matadors to quickly take an 8-7 lead. Both teams continued to exchange unforced errors until Jordan Walley promptly turned on the offensive for the Matadors, expanding their lead to four at 21-17. A late push by Exposure would bring them within two, but the Matadors would close out the set 25-23. Both teams would give away 11 points in errors during the set, with 13 coming from the service line.
In the second set, both teams regained their composure, exchanging points to a 6-6 tie. Southern Exposure slowly built a lead off of some excellent in-system passing by Eddie Moushikhian and Johnny Gomez to give them a 16-13 lead mid-set. The Matadors continued to battle, but a few service errors gave Southern Exposure a 21-18 lead. Exposure would win four of the following six points to take the set 25-20 while hitting a 0.538 clip.
Southern Exposure came out hungry in the third set, immediately capturing the lead. The Matadors tried to keep it within six for a 16-10 mid-set score. However, Southern Exposure would take advantage of Matador's twelve unforced errors to easily take the set 25-13 while only committing three unforced errors of their own.
The fourth set mirrored the third, with Southern Exposure quickly taking over while the Matadors couldn't seem to find any offensive strategy. Southern Exposure would take the set and the match 25-15, holding the Matadors to a 0.000 hitting percentage.
Southern Exposure would end the match, hitting 0.461 as a team, with all hitters chipping in at least 6 kills and Gomez chipping in 6 digs. Martin Petris led the way offensively for the Matadors, putting away a team-high 12 kills, while Carlos Serrano-Aragon put away 3 aces from the service line. Southern Exposure is now 1-1, and the Matadors are now 0-1.
