2019 NVA Eastern Conference 1 Recap
April 6th and 7th at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville, Kentucky, The Junior Volleyball Association hosted The NVA in the 1st Eastern Conference Event of 2019. Costa Mesa Stunners, Angola Pineapple, New York Legion and Chicago Icemen all competed in front of crowds up to two thousand people for six matches.
The opening match for the 2019 season placed Chicago Icemen (0-0) and defending Western Conference Champions Costa Mesa Stunners (0-0) in a rematch from the 1st round of the NVA Championships. Icemen picked up right where they left off the previous year and despite a solid blocking performance by Stunners Middle Matt August, Tim Falknor was able to set Icemen past Stunners 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-19). Dan Starkey was man of the match with 13 kills and 16 points overall. Icemen maintain their dominance over Stunners with their NVA Overall record being 2-0.
The 2nd match of the weekend came between Chicago Icemen (1-0) and reigning NVA Champs Angola Pineapple (0-0). Perhaps the fiercest rivalry in the NVA led by the top two setters in the league Conor Eaton from Icemen and Lloy Ball from Pineapple, the match didn’t disappoint. Both teams exchanged blows while Outside Hitter Kyle Overby from Icemen and Opposite Jeff Ptak from Pineapple had an epic battle going at each other in the front row. it ended up being Outside Hitter Ivan Matos from Pineapple who became the X factor late in set 5 to end up earning man of the match and helping seal the victory for Pineapple. In the highest scoring match in NVA history, Pineapple defeated Icemen 3-2 (25-18, 25-27, 27-25, 19-25, 20-18). Pineapple takes the lead in the NVA Overall record over Icemen 3-2.
After the long 2 hour 20 minute match New York Legion made their 2019 debut against Costa Mesa Stunners (0-1). Stunners came out well adjusted from their first match, jumping up on Legion with a quick 25-15 set one. It didn’t take long for Legion to get acclimated to JVA environment as they rebounded nicely in set 2 (25-20) behind a strong showing from Outside Hitter Alex McColgin. However, Opposite Dillon Emery and Middle Matt August from Stunners proved to much for Legion as they outlasted Legion in the second consecutive 5 set match 3-2 (25-15, 20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-9). This was the first ever meeting between New York Legion and Costa Mesa Stunners, the Stunners now holding the overall match lead 1-0 and improving to 1-1 for the 2019 season.
Day 2 of the NVA Eastern Conference Event Costa Mesa Stunners (1-1) were back in action against Angola Pineapple (1-0). The only previous meeting between the two teams happened at the 2017 Las Vegas Showcase where Stunners took down Pineapple to go to the final four. Though Pineapple had solid performances by Outside Hitter Kyle Radde and Libero JJ Meyer, Matt August, Luis Palos and the Stunners maintained their dominance on Pineapple 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23). Costa Mesa Stunners remain undefeated over Pineapple, they are currently the only team in the NVA with a winning record against them. Stunners finished the weekend 2-1 giving them a great start to their 2019 season. The next event they will appear in is the Western Conference Event 1 in Long Beach, California May 25th and 26th hosted by JVA.
The second match of day 2 was Chicago Icemen (1-1) vs New York Legion (0-1). Legion jumped to a quick start taking the first set against Icemen 25-20. Icemen recovered quickly and completely dominated set 2, 25-11. However, Legion was able to gain the upper hand on the shoulder of Jordan Varee, who was playing outside hitter for the match. Legion finished off Icemen 3-1 (25-20, 11-25, 25-22, 25-22). Legion maintains their winning ways over Icemen with an overall record of 3-1. Icemen finished off the weekend 1-2 sitting in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. Icemen’s next NVA appearance with be the Eastern Conference Event 2 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana May 18th-19th hosted by Empowered Volleyball Academy.
The final match of the event put Angola Pineapple (1-1) vs New York Legion (1-1). The winner would leave the weekend the top team in the Eastern Conference. Legion led most of the set one behind the blocking of Middle Lance Rogers and setting of Aaron Ahloe before Pineapple was ultimately able to pull out the set victory 25-23. The late run by Pineapple set the tone for the remainder of the match where Outside Hitter Tomas Goldsmith took over particularly from the back row. Pineapple claims the top spot of the Eastern Conference defeating Legion 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-18). Pineapple continues their dominance over the Eastern Conference finishing the weekend 2-1. Legion drops to 2nd place in the Eastern Conference 1-2. Both teams will be featured at the Eastern Conference Event 2 in Ft. Wayne Indiana May 18th and 19th hosted by Empowered Volleyball Academy.
It was a fantastic start to the 2019 NVA Season. The partnership between JVA and The NVA gave the league exposure to over 8,000 young volleyball players. All of the NVA teams represented well playing some of the most competitive volleyball in the United States.
Up next for the NVA, May 18th-19th in the Eastern Conference Event 2 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana hosted Empowered Volleyball Academy featuring Angola Pineapple (2-1), New York Legion (1-2), Chicago Icemen (1-2), and Santa Barbara Rising Tide (0-0). This will be the 2019 NVA debut for the Rising Tide.
